The beginnings of organized tourism activity date back to 1904 when the City Improvement Company was established.
The first hotel, the Zvonimir Hotel, was built in 1906. In 1908 a bathing area was built and ceremoniously opened in Baska. 1908 is very significant for the fast development of tourism that ensued. However, Baska’s tourism offer was designed and accelerated by Check Emil Geistlich by building the then quite modernly designed and equipped Baska Hotel with 33 rooms on the beach. He promoted the Hotel in Prague under the motto: |
“From the room straight into the sea”. Doctor Zdenka Cermakova also contributed to the development of tourism in Baska. While the number of registered tourists was only 18 in 1908, it grew to 1785 in 1912.
The following hotels operated in Baska during the period from 1921 to 1940: Baska, Grandic, Velebit, Zvonimir, Praha and Volaric - built before 1914, and Kvarner, Triglav and Europe - built in 1930. Besides hotels, numerous modern villas and inns were also built. The Baska Hotel Company, one of the first on the island of Krk, was established in 1949.
It consisted of one hotel (former Volaric Hotel) and a restaurant called Ribar. The company had two permanent employees and 12 seasonal workers.
The first foreign tourists started coming in 1955, and in 1956 the first contracts with foreign agencies such as Goetller, Capri and Ruef from Vienna were made through the Kvarner Express agency from Opatija. 20 B category bungalows (total capacity: 40 beds) were built in 1962.The Zablace Camp was built in 1967 when |
it had the capacity to accommodate 300 visitors, whereas today it has 1,600 accommodation sites.
The Adria Hotel Annex (B category) with 66 beds was built in 1964, and two years later the Zvonimir Hotel Annex with 152 beds was built as well. Good business results allowed for further growth of the Company and the construction of the Corinthia Hotel (Phase 1 – 1970) with 248 beds, a modern kitchen and restaurant. The Bunculuka Naturist Camp with 1,200 campsites was opened in 1978.
The second phase of the construction of the Corinthia Hotel followed in 1986 when a hotel wing with 274 beds was built, whereas the third phase followed in 1990 when the Corinthia III with 337 beds was built. At the same time the Company built restaurants Velebit, Strand, Galeb, Ribar and Zarok, ten tennis courts, opened three supply centers – stores…
Since 1994, after the transition, the Company has operated under the name Hoteli Baska d.d., a stock company with mixed ownership structure. Corinthia I was completely renovated in 1998 and is now a 4-star hotel with all related amenities. The same year the 3-star Corinthia Villas were built where the bungalows used to be, and the Zablace Camp was renovated.
Thanks to continuous investment into accommodation facilities and the improvement of the quality of service, Hoteli Baska has become a recognizable tourism company and the main driver of tourism development in Baska.
Further development and growth of the Company resulted in new investments in 2003. The old Zvonimir Hotel Annex was completely
renovated into the beautiful, 4-star Zvonimir Hotel, the first 4-star hotel on the island of Krk located directly on the beach. The Adria Hotel Annex was also renovated into the 4-star Villa Adria, a new facility with 12 modernly equipped apartments.
The same year significant funds were invested into camps as well: new sanitary facilities and a new reception area were built in the Zablace Camp, whereas in the Bunculuka Camp the Company renovated the reception area and the sanitary facilities.
Continuous investments into business operations (the quality of service mainly), cultural heritage and enviable climatic features of the area make a
| good basis for the development of a company which leaves the guests satisfied and to which the guests return over and over again. |
